Photo Suggestions

The two best times to photograph Grandfather Mt is in the fall when the leaves are that full color.  (Try going in the middle of week - less people)

And in June when the rhododendrons are in bloom

Take time to photograph all the way to the top

If time permits, take a hike along the many trails that are available

Driving Tips and Other Information

From Asheville (70 miles) is taking I-40 East to Marion, NC. Take Exit #85. Turn left at the bottom of the ramp and go one mile to a stoplight.

At the stoplight turn left and follow US 221 North to the entrance of Grandfather Mountain (about 30 miles).

The most scenic route is taking the Blue Ridge Parkway north from Asheville (about 90 miles from downtown, allow 2.5 hours) to Milepost 305 - take the US 221 Highway/Linville exit just before the Linn Cove Viaduct.

There is a $20.00 entrance fee as of 5/18

Grandfather has environmental habitats for black bears, river otters, cougars, eagles and elk.

Viewing areas at this mini zoo give you an up-close perspective of the animals. A aquarium-like area allows you to watch the playful otters above or below the water.

Special activities and programs with the Mountain's naturalists are presented daily during the summer months and included in the admission.

Bathroom facilities available at top of mountain at Visitors Center
